Science Intent

Through Science, we provide our children with the opportunity to discover, explore and understand the natural phenomena that underpins our world.

We aim to stimulate a child’s curiosity in finding out how and why things happen in the way they do, through the methods of inquiry and investigation.

We teach our children that science changes as our understanding and experiences change. This is an ongoing process as humanity's ideas about the world are constantly analysed, revised, developed and evaluated.

It is our intent that science assists our pupils to appreciate the way the subject will affect their future on a personal and national stage, but also as Global Citizens.

Kapow Science

We plan for Science using the National Curriculum objectives and KAPOW to ensure a thorough approach. These themes are ordered in a way which is progressive and ensures a depth of understanding. These form the building blocks of progress in terms of knowledge, skills and understanding as the children move through school.

Within each unit of work, we ensure a thorough coverage of inquiry and investigative skills are achieved using an inquiry-based question. This allows our children to apply their knowledge and understanding in a real-world capacity in order to embed their learning.

Implementation

We support our children in the following ways:

• Word mats could be used to support the subject

• We make Science practical to support all

• We use mixed ability pairings or groupings to support all

• We use different methods of recording ideas and learning, including lots of opportunities to discuss, explore and use visuals.

• We recap previous learning and revisit it. We also use it to over learn and retain key bits of information.

• Our lessons build on from proir knowledge

• As a school we use icons and duel coding on PowerPoints to support learning through Widget.
