Maths
Mathematics at Norbriggs Primary is built on consistency, fluency, deep understanding and inclusion. We follow a mastery approach so that every child, regardless of starting point, can achieve well in mathematics.
We endeavor to teach our students to become confident mathematicians who are not afraid to take risks. Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment in the future.
A high-quality mathematics education, therefore, provides a foundation for curiosity, in order to understand the world and oneself.
Early Maths (EYFS)
Mathematics begins with strong foundations in:
-
Number composition
-
Pattern and structure
-
Mathematical talk and reasoning
-
High quality provision using real world and natural materials
Through adult modelling, purposeful play and daily interactions, children develop secure early number understanding.
Mastery Approach
Our teaching encapsulates a Mastery Approach and is based on the Mathematics Programme of Study to ensure that the aims of the National Curriculum are met.
It is expected that the majority of students move through the curriculum at broadly the same pace. Pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas, making rich connections to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.
Progress should always be based on the security of a pupil's understanding. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding through additional practice.
The mastery approach to mathematics, and its strategies, encapsulates inclusion. This can include:
-
CPA - Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract
-
Conceptual and procedural variation
-
Scaffolds to support progress including stem sentences, manipulatives and adult support
-
Interventions linked to ISP targets.
