Children in Year 6 enjoyed a day at the National Coal Mining Museum. They explored the surface areas such as the pit pony stables, the winder, the control room and the pit baths and medical centre. The children descended 140 metres underground in a traditional mining cage, equipped with helmet, lamp and battery pack. Children explored the mine with an experienced miner and took part with hands-on experiences such as coal collection, trap door, separating coal and rocks, building safe pit props and crawling through tunnels. Everyone had a fantastic time.
